As we finish out our first year in business, we're actively planning events for: Black History Month, Women's' History Month, and our first anniversary. Seems like a good time to look back and journal all we've accomplished in addition to looking forward for things to come.

 In a word, improvements.
We get no funding from any external sources. No grants, no external start-up seed money, no bank loans. Everything you see here was self funded by me, and built on a budget (hopefully) appropriately matched to our market. So while we pay down our debts, we have improvements in mind and wouldn't mind a little help from our village. Improvement examples we have in mind are hand railing for the front step (only one step), additional sound deadening, and assistive hearing equipment in the theater. We're always looking for ways to improve your movie going experience. If you have ideas, please let us know. The more donations we receive, the faster we enhance your movie going experience. So many great things happening at SMALL STAR Art House it's tough to keep up and share our gratitude. In our three short months in business, we've grown our patron list to 870. That means 870 people came to this website and manually signed up. We have approximately two dozen patrons who've been to most of our films. Of those, a dozen have been to every single film! Amazing! Huge thanks to all patrons. This only works if you all keep buying tickets. Yes it's true, we do love rainy days and look forward to the stinking hot dog days of summer too. We want to be part of your weekly routine.
Our single session of "The Gettysburg Story" film by Jake Borritt has led to a lot of requests to reshow the film. Given the actual battle took place on July 1 - 3 we're thinking that might be a good time to screen the film again here at SMALL STAR. Stay tuned! Monday, April 25th we were once again blessed by a group of patrons coming together in community to rent the theater, bring in great food, and pay homage to the musical genius Prince. While we decorated the galleries, frequent patrons wore purple, took over the space and did the rest. From Prince radio to sushi to tandoori chicken to asparagus wrapped in puff pastries, our small group of mourners shared in mourning the loss of Prince. Stay tuned for photo album from the event.
Rentals help us meet our monthly numbers. Monday through Wednesday, our gallery and screening room are available for your organization or corporation's special event. $220 rental fee, call to discuss movie options! Our goal is keep our programming unique and keep you coming back to SMALL STAR frequently. To that end, we are creating several specialized screenings occurring outside of our normally scheduled films. (Monday - Wednesday evenings)
First up will happen in National Bike Month of May. Together with the YMCA, and York City Health, SMALL STAR will play host to a special private screening of an array of pre-selected, and biking-related short films. National Bike to Work Week is May 16 - 20 with National Bike to Work Day happening May 20th. Look for details for Monday, May 16th event and possibly others. Why not ride your bike to SMALL STAR? Plenty of supervised, and secured bike parking in our secluded court yard. We are also working on a music movie club whereby we'd show a different music related film once a month. Films such as: Wrecking Crew, Muscle Shoals, 20 Feet From Stardom, remastered concerts, and content that our club members bring. Perhaps we could name it after Sheryl Crow's break through hit: Tuesday Evening Music Club? [read more] During movies and gallery hours, we offer a wide variety of high-end, craft snacks and craft sodas. All are locally made, except the sodas which come from a brewery in Milwaukee, owned by a fellow who grew up in York and still has strong family roots here. .Our snacks are purveyed by a new startup concessions distribution company located in downtown York called "Rising Tide Distribution." Tip of the hat to our new friends at Rising Tide for making our lives easier. Best wishes for two centuries of success*, friends.
In a classic example of "too much government in our lives", I was required to take a 9 hour safe food handling course and pass a national exam. Somehow in order to hand you a root beer across the counter, the government thinks I need to know at what temperature to cook a pork chop. Next time you come to the theater, know that you are being safely served, and go ahead and ask me the correct temperature for reheating macaroni and cheese. SMALL STAR is York proud. ~Patti NEWS ALERT: First film announced for opening night, March 4, 2016: "King Georges". Opening nationwide on February 26th, and screening in York,PA at SMALL STAR a week later. This is what we mean by "first run films."
